After all, how long does the equipment that makes up a solar energy system last?

In 2016, Wanda Martins invested in a photovoltaic system for her residence, being one of the first residents of Maringá to invest in solar energy.

Today, five years after installation, the investment made has already been recovered with the savings obtained on the electricity bill.

“When I installed photovoltaics at home in 2016, little was said about it. There weren’t many examples or guarantees that the acquisition would be worth it”, says Wanda.

The 12.24 kWp project, developed by Platão Energia, included 48 255W modules, a Fronius Symo 12 kW inverter and cost around R$ 70 thousand.

Just like Wanda, hundreds of Brazilians have invested in photovoltaic sources to reduce their energy bills. Currently, the country has 5.35 GW of installed power in DG (distributed generation).

The great attraction is the longevity that the equipment that makes up a photovoltaic system has. “When well installed and made up of good equipment, the system has a useful life of at least 25 years, which means that it is possible to obtain at least 20 years of profit with this type of installation”, highlights Diogo Martins Rosa, executive director of Plato Energy.

When it comes to longevity, engineer Franz Ammersdorfer stands out. For more than 23 years, he has had a photovoltaic system with the Fronius Sunrise inverter.

“At the time, the inverter was a prototype. The agreement was that, as soon as it went into series production, I would have a series production model”, he says. However, according to Ammersdorfer, it was not necessary to change the equipment. “The inverter has been working since day 1 and I haven't had a single problem with it.”

Today, more than two decades later, the engineer is using his solar energy to power his entire home, in addition to investing in sustainable transport. “I bought an electric vehicle, which I can charge with my own electricity produced from the sun,” he added.
