Second study carried out for the CELA (Clean Energy Latin America), the Marketplace in storage systems energy in Brazil may have one expansion in 12,8% per year until 2040, with one increase from to 7.2 GW in capacity installed in the period.

According to the consultancy's projections, the advancement of the battery market in the country's electrical infrastructure could generate more than US$12.5 billion annually, considering current regulations.

Still according to CELA, with incentives, clear regulations and established goals, this potential could exceed the predicted 7.2 GW, reaching up to 18.2 GW.

These estimates do not include the potential of “systems behind the meter“, installed in industries, businesses, rural properties and homes, which could further expand the impact on the sector.

CELA also points out that “the use of batteries represents one of the main drivers for the expansion of clean and sustainable energy sources, given their multiple applications and countless benefits, and could be one of the great catalysts for the consolidation of the energy transition in the country”.

“However, achieving desired levels of growth in Brazil will require the implementation of clear goals for storage systems, investments in research and development, consolidation of regulations and establishment of fiscal adjustments”, commented Camila Ramos, CEO of CELA.

“This includes, for example, setting tariffs for ancillary services and stacking revenues, which can significantly contribute to reducing systems implementation costs and increasing the financial attractiveness of projects,” he added.

Finally, CELA assesses that implementing regulations, setting targets and offering incentives play a crucial role in the development of the energy storage sector.

“Defining the regulatory framework for a storage agent is extremely important, given the wide range of applications of these systems. Such rules can play a fundamental role in determining the costs and revenues associated with storage systems, crucial aspects to enable their operation in an effective and attractive way in the Brazilian energy scenario”, concluded Camila
