MME talks about rigorous response to vandals who attacked transmission lines

Minister met with authorities from the police and the electricity sector to discuss actions to combat acts of vandalism

The Minister of Ministry of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, met this Tuesday (17) with authorities from the Federal Police, Federal Highway Police and representatives of the electricity sector to give a “vigorous response to vandals trying to attack national heritage, so important for the country’s development, job creation and income”.

According to the Minister, the meeting served to discuss fundamental issues for the modernization of security in the national broadcast system, such as the implementation of video monitoring, drone surveillance and other instruments that make it possible to identify possible sabotage attempts such as those recorded between the 8th and 14th of January.

“This event is serving as an opportunity for us to advance in the security of this great heritage of all Brazilians”, he highlighted.

Among the actions defined are the strengthening of partnerships with the Ministry of Justice and the Military, State and Federal Highway police to reinforce patrolling in these locations.

Silveira also informed that the Federal Police has ongoing investigations and all necessary measures to monitor the system are being taken by the MME, ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) and intelligence agencies (GSI, PF, PRF and Ministry of Justice).

“All this work is being developed so that we can turn the page on these attacks, which are not justified, and be able to continue discussing important issues, such as the modernization of the electrical system, the energy transition and reasonable tariffs, such fundamental and priority issues. for the country and for President Lula”, stated the minister, who guaranteed that, despite the events, the supply to the population was at no time harmed.

Also present at the meeting were members of Abrate (Brazilian Association of Electric Energy Transmission Companies), ANEEL and ONS (National Electric System Operator).

The president of Abrate, Mário Dias Miranda, highlighted the importance of the MME at this time of attention to the country's electrical system. “The Ministry has articulated and demonstrated its work in its actions.”

“We want to work together and be part of the solution. These events that have been happening are sensitive and attack the entire infrastructure of the electricity sector, which is an essential asset for Brazilian society. Intelligence that acts preventively is fundamental for all of us”, he stated.

In ANEEL's latest report, seven incidents of suspected vandalism were recorded since the 8th, three in Rondônia, two in Paraná and two in São Paulo. Four transmission towers were toppled and 12 damaged.
