New rules of the game could harm solar generation

After discussions, the new rules will apply to new consumers who have solar energy systems

Photovoltaic solar energy has achieved dizzying growth in recent years in Brazil. Faced with the increase in the number of consumers who produce their own energy with photovoltaic systems, concessionaires have asked ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) to discuss the rules that govern the distributed generation of electricity sector, notably resolutions 482 and 687 of the agency. The discussions, which have already begun through meetings and public consultations, seek new models so that after 2020 consumers will be forced to pay compensation to electricity distributors.

Through public consultation with the population and the market, ANEEL intends to review the regulation of the distributed generation sector, reducing the attractiveness of self-generation for the common consumer, with the aim of mitigating the supposed losses that electricity distributors have suffered with the growth in the use of distributed generation with photovoltaic systems and solar plants.

After discussions, the new rules will apply to new consumers, who have their solar energy systems installed after the publication of the new regulations, which should occur in 2020.
