What is an EPE standard solarimetric station?

Find out which instruments this equipment must have according to EPE regulations

In Brazil, it is mandatory, for large solar plant projects intended for the sale of energy at auctions, the use of stations equipped with at least one global irradiance pyranometer.

The requirements and specifications of the instruments are determined by the EPE (Energy Research Company), an agency of the Federal Government.

The document EPE-DEE-RE-065/2013 of 03/23/2016, entitled “Instructions for requesting registration and technical qualification with a view to participating in electrical energy auctions”, determines which requirements must be met for the qualification of photovoltaic plant projects in electrical energy auctions promoted by the government .

The company or investor that plans to build a solar plant and sell its energy at auction must carry out a mandatory study of the plant's generation potential in advance. Mandatory measurement of the terrain's solar irradiance is required for a minimum period of 12 months.

The data collected by the solarimetric station must be inserted into computer programs for simulating photovoltaic systems, with the purpose of estimating the energy production of the future plant, so that the enterprise can have a firm guarantee of energy delivery.

According to EPE regulations, the solarimetric station must have at least the following instruments:

  • two pyranometers of Class I or higher according to the standard ISO 9060:1990, for measuring global horizontal irradiation;
  • an anemometer (for measuring wind speed);
  • a hygrometer (to measure the relative humidity of the air), and;
  • a thermometer (to measure air temperature).

There are companies specialized in supplying this type of solarimetric station, with all the instruments and equipment necessary for operation, including a box with data logger, tower, remote power photovoltaic module and backup battery.
