For the second week in a row, the ONS (National System Operator) reduced the load projection for July. The new estimate points to growth of 0.9% (69,854 MWmed), two percentage points below the forecast presented at the beginning of the month. The agency does not explain the reasons for the review.

See the load forecast for each subsystem:

  • North: + 11.5%, 7,192 MWmed;
  • Northeast: + 4.1%, 11,621;
  • Southeast/Central-West: -1%, 39,136 MWmed;
  • South: -1.3%, 11,905 MWmed.

The indicators compare estimates for the end of July 2023, compared to the same period last year.

Storage of reservoirs

The large volume of rain caused by the El Niño phenomenon should increase the reservoirs in the southern region to 95% of maximum capacity at the end of the month. The North and Southeast/Mid-West can, respectively, reach 94.5% and 84.3%. For the Northeast, the projection is 78.8%.

Inflow forecast

The ENA (Affluent Natural Energy) – the volume of water that reaches the reservoir capable of being converted into hydroelectric energy – has predictions compatible with the dry period, but with a significant deviation in the South region, whose predicted ENA is at 117% of the historical average (MLT), almost triple that indicated in the previous estimate.

The Southeast/Central-West, which concentrates 70% of SIN (National Interconnected System) reservoirs, should register ENA of 86% from MLT on July 31, compared to 84% previously presented. For the North and Northeast subsystems, ENA forecasts are 76% and 50%, respectively.

The Marginal Operating Cost (CMO) remains at zero in all subsystems for the thirtieth consecutive week, a pattern that began at the end of December 2022. It is the longest period of CMO at zero consecutively in the historical series monitored by the Operator.
