The expansion plan for the Brazilian energy transmission system foresees investments of R$ 56.2 billion, according to studies completed in November 2023. According to EPE (Energy Research Company), R$ 37.8 billion relate to investments in power lines transmission and R$ 18.4 billion are related to substations.
The numbers are part of the PET (Transmission Expansion Program) and PELP (Long-Term Expansion Plan) Cycle 2023, which indicate the needs of the facilities for the years 2029 and 2030, respectively.
The documents are published twice a year and cover all SIN (National Interconnected System) expansion works that have not yet been authorized or tendered. The documents are relevant to the market as they present an overview of the works planned in the electricity sector.
Around R$ 24.7 billion (45%) of investments will be tendered in the two transmission auctions scheduled to take place in 2024. R$ 21 billion (55%) comprise works to be tendered from 2025 onwards.
Of the total of R$ 55.2 billion, 46% (R$ 25.6 billion) aim to reinforce regional systems and 56% (R$ 30.6 billion) represent investments for the flow of energy generation, mainly renewable energy, such as wind and solar.

The contributions should benefit the states of Alagoas (R$ 1.70 billion), Bahia (R$ 5.96 billion), Ceará (R$ 2.84 billion), Maranhão (R$ 1.29 billion), Mato Grosso do Sul (R$ 138 million), Minas Gerais (R$ 5.40 billion), Paraíba (R$ 770 million), Paraná (R$ 1.19 billion), Pernambuco (R$ 2.27 billion), Piauí (R$ 5.07 billion), Rio de Janeiro (R$ 161 million), Rio Grande do Norte (R$ 483 million), Rio Grande do Sul (R$ 1.91 billion), Santa Catarina (R$ 624.6 million), São Paulo (R$ 704.2 million) and Tocantins ( R$ 1.31 bi).
