PM da capital paulista começa a usar veículos elétricos no patrulhamento

The Military Police of the state of São Paulo (SP) began today (1), the 90-day period for evaluating performance with electric vehicles dedicated to police work.

The cars used in this test stage are two of the Leaf model, from the automotive manufacturer Nissan, and an I5, from the manufacturer BYD. The three vehicles are already available to the CPA/M-5 (Metropolitan Area Policing Command), in the west zone of the capital. The manufacturers were defined by a public civil hearing.

The vehicles will be used in the school patrol program and to answer 190 calls in the area of the 23rd BPM/M (Metropolitan Military Police Battalion). The region has the largest number of electric car charging points in the city.

The project aims to evaluate the operating quality of cars, considering their technological characteristics, such as battery recharging time, acceleration response and braking system.

Some peculiarities of the vehicles will also be evaluated, such as low noise and possible savings in maintenance, as the vehicles do not have several mechanical components present in combustion-powered models.

“In addition to being a 100% vehicle powered by clean energy, we expect to reduce maintenance costs and also equip the Military Police with alternative energy sources for their vehicles”, says Carlos Henrique Lucena, lieutenant colonel responsible for the project.

“There are international protocols to reduce the manufacturing of combustion-powered models and we will also be prepared for possible crises in the supply of fossil fuels”, he added.

The vehicles were received with stickers and with GPS navigation equipment, light signals, sirens and radio communication installed. After the test periods, the CMM (Military Police Motor Mechanization Center) will produce a report with the results of the evaluation and all the technical specifications necessary for the bidding processes.

If approved, the document may be used in possible purchase proposals from the PM and other public bodies interested in purchasing electric models. The expectation is to exchange part of the PM fleet, currently 20 thousand vehicles, with models with zero carbon emissions.
