Rio+Saneamento, concessionaire of Grupo Águas do Brasil, announced that two photovoltaic plants will be built to meet part of its energy consumption in the water and sewage sanitation process.

The plants contracted in the DG (distributed generation) modality have, together, 5.5 MW of installed power with the capacity to generate 13.5 million kWh annually.

The units will be built in the cities of Seropédica (RJ), in Baixada Fluminense, and Porto Real (RJ), in Sul Fluminense, based on an agreement with the Gera Group.

Free market

Now on the free market, Rio+Sanamento will start purchasing approximately 50 million kWh per year from a guaranteed clean energy source — I-REC certification from biomass. The contract in this modality is signed with Raízen.

With these actions, Rio+Saneamento will have, by 2024, approximately 96% of its energy consumption coming from clean energy sources.

“These two contracts reinforce our commitment to the energy transition and operational efficiency, and are equivalent to a reduction in emissions of 27.2 thousand tons of CO2 and the planting of 190,500 trees throughout the project. Our goal is to reach 100% of clean energy by 2025,” says Leonardo Righetto, president of the concessionaire.

The energy from DG will be used in 17 cities served by Rio+Saneamento in the state, more precisely in the low voltage operational units: Water Treatment Stations (WTPs), water and sewage lifts and catchments, in addition to the operation of boosters.

The energy captured on the free market will be used to supply ETAs, medium voltage water intakes and pumps.
