September saw an increase of 5.2% in electricity consumption, says EPE

O national consumption in electricity in September was from 44,462 GWh, increase of 5,2% in comparison as same month in 2022 and the greater growth since August in 2021. Which is pointed The Monthly review from the EPE (Energy research company).

According to EPE, the residential (9.1%) and commercial (8.5%) classes led the expansion in consumption. In the 12-month period, national consumption was 520,210 GWh, an increase of 2.3% compared to the immediately previous period.

Industrial Consumption

Regarding industrial consumption, it totaled 15,975 GWh of electricity, which grew by 1.9% in September compared to the same period last year.

The Northeast stood out with an increase of 11.8%. In second place was the North, with an increase of 6.3%. The Central-West (+0.6%) and South (+0.5%) regions also increased their consumption, while the Southeast had a lower consumption of -0.8%. 

Residential consumption

The residential class had a consumption of 13,641 GWh in September, an increase of 9.1% compared to the same period last year. According to EPE, it was the highest monthly variation rate since January 2021 with a percentage of 4.3%. What drove the increase in consumption was the use of air conditioning units, due to the extreme heat recorded in September.

The North was the state that showed the biggest increase in electricity consumption, with 14.8%. The Central-West came in second, with an increase of 10.9%, followed by the Northeast, with 9.9%, the Southeast, with 8.5%, and finally the South, with an increase of 5.6%.

Commercial consumption

Commercial class consumption expanded by 8.5% in September, compared to the same period last year, reaching 8,019 GWh. It was the highest rate of change since August 2022 (+6.8%).

In commercial terms, all regions saw an increase in the consumption rate. The highlight was the South, with an increase of +10.8%, followed by the Southeast (+9.8%), North (+6.7%), Central-West (+5.2%) and Northeast (+4.3% ).

Hiring environment

As for the contracting environment, with 18,135 GWh, the free market accounted for 40.8% of national electricity consumption in September, registering 6.8% growth in consumption and 24.4% in the number of consumers, compared to September 2022. 

The distributors' captive market, with 26,327 GWh, accounted for 59.2% of national electricity consumption, an increase of 4.1%, while the number of consumer units increased by 1.9% in the same period.
