Shell Energy will invest R$ 3 billion in renewable energy

Brand is launched with a focus on zero net emissions, in addition to generating and selling electrical energy

The Shell Group launched this Tuesday (21) Shell Energy, its own segment focused on the energy transition and decarbonization.

The objective of the initiative, announced during a press conference, is to offer the Brazilian market products with a lower environmental impact and sell electrical energy through renewable sources (solar and wind plants) and low carbon energy (thermal from gas).

In a statement, Shell highlighted that its goal is to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050, in addition to offering environmental products, such as renewable energy certificates and carbon offsets.

Since 2017, the group has been selling electricity, gas and environmental products and the prospect is to invest more than R$ 3 billion by the end of 2025. Currently, Shell has investments of more than US$ 2 billion in clean energy projects, in addition to produce 6 GW of energy through renewable sources.

During the press conference, André Araujo, president of Shell Brasil, stated that the country is a great place for growth opportunities in several areas, especially in the renewable energy sector.

Guilherme Perdigão, director of Renewables and Energy Solutions at Shell Brasil and Shell Energy, commented that Brazil is one of Shell Energy's strategic markets, already presented only in European countries, including Turkey, and more recently in the United States (2020) and in Australia (2021). “The launch of the brand in Brazil reflects the effort towards decarbonization and also the opportunities opened up by the New Gas Law and the entry of consumers into the free electricity market”, he stated.

According to Gabriela Oliveira, renewable energy development manager, it took four years to create plans aimed at the energy transition. According to her, the launch brings new business opportunities for the group. “As the first pillar of the energy chain, renewable [energy] generation will enable the Shell Energy brand to offer a truly integrated product to its customers”, he highlighted.

Other projects

Shell Energy is also part of the joint venture of the thermal plant under construction Marlim Azul (Macaé – RJ), powered by pre-salt natural gas, and has six other solar projects with generation capacity of more than 2 GW – including the term of cooperation for the joint venture for a photovoltaic project, with Gerdau. “We are also willing to make new investments in clean energy generation joint ventures,” stated Perdigão.

In addition to electricity contracts, Shell Energy will offer combined electricity and gas and LNG packages. “Our objective is to be the preferred partner for companies of all sizes, including those that are not familiar with the free energy market, but who wish to reduce their costs and footprint”, explained Perdigão.
