SMA will supply inverters for 220 MW solar plant in the Atacama Desert

The project developed in Chile will have an installed capacity of 220 MW

German photovoltaic inverter manufacturer SMA will supply 46 MVPS (Medium Voltage Power Plants) for the solar plant in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The request was made to the company earlier this month.

The Diego de Almagro Sur photovoltaic project was developed by Colbun SA, South American power generation company, and will have an installed capacity of 220 MW.

“The Diego de Almagro Sur photovoltaic plant will play an important role in the Chilean energy supply market. That is why we are particularly pleased that Colbun SA has opted for SMA’s reliable technology and proven experience”, says Daniel Rosende, General Manager of SMA South America.

Each photovoltaic plant at the Diego de Almagro Sur plant was equipped with a Sunny Central 4600 inverter with SMA's Opiticool temperature management system.

“Our system solutions for photovoltaic projects in the megawatt range have proven their reliability and performance around the world and are ideal for the extreme conditions of the Atacama Desert,” highlights Rosende.

In total, 44% of the electrical energy used in Chile comes from renewable energy sources. The country has a program to increase the proportion of the fuel mix that comes from renewables to up to 70% by 2030 and to 95% by 2050.

SMA revenue and expectations

Last year, SMA Solar sold 14.4 GW of inverter power, an increase of 26% compared to 2019. The company has more than 100 GW of installed power worldwide.

According to the manufacturer, the main stimuli behind this increase is the expected continued growth of the photovoltaic market in Europe and America, as well as the global storage market.

“Despite the considerable challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic, we achieved the forecast sales and earnings growth at the start of the year in 2020,” says Jürgen Reinert, CEO of SMA.
