A CG (Gerdau Commercial), Gerdau's own distributor of steel products, announced that it has been operating with solar energy in 11 units since January 2022.
The units are located in the municipalities of Barreiras (BA), Caruaru (PE), Feira de Santana (BA), Juazeiro (BA), Juazeiro do Norte (CE), Salvador (BA), Recife (PE), Varginha (MG) , Governador Valadares (MG), Sinop (MT) and Volta Redonda (RJ)
According to the company, the project should generate an estimated reduction of 44% in CO2 emissions linked to CG per year and costs of around 10%.
According to Mauro de Paula, executive director of Comercial Gerdau, the economy was taken into account, but it is not the main motivator of the initiative. “What led us to operate with renewable energy was our concern with environmental factors and the sustainable commitments made by the company in its ESG plan,” he said.
“Policies focused on sustainability have strategic visibility at Gerdau, as this agenda will lead us to a promising future. We seek to make a difference in society, as we believe it is the right thing to do”, concluded the executive.
For the transition, CG became part of the Shared Electricity Generation Consortium, for consumption in its units that operate at low voltage.
Previously, distributors used electrical energy generated by hydroelectric or thermoelectric plants. The initiative predicts that, by the end of 2022, 15 more units will migrate to the same model.
