Volkswagen, Raízen and Shell announced a partnership to value the impact of using renewable energy to decarbonize the automotive sector.

According to the companies, the agreement includes a series of initiatives, such as the installation of charging stations for the brand's EVs (electric vehicles).

The network will initially be made up in the state of São Paulo, including points in the capital and on the main access highways, with the intention of connecting to some of the main cities in Brazil in the future.

The partnership also aims to encourage the use of ethanol as a biofuel with low greenhouse gas emissions. The idea is to seek the development of potential new ethanol formulas and work on expanding its use in international markets.

“For Volkswagen, it is an honor to establish this partnership with two of the largest energy companies in Brazil. It is a privilege to have ethanol in the country, it improves the environment due to its low CO2 emissions, generates many jobs and contributes to the growth of the country's economy,” said Pablo Di Si, president and CEO of Volkswagen Latin America.

“With all these actions in partnership with Raízen and Shell, we are working not only on solutions for our products but also reinforcing sustainability in our factories and dealership network. All of this is very integrated with the global WayToZero program, whose goal is to make the company carbon neutral by 2050”, he added.

Shell Energy will invest R$ 3 billion in renewable energy

Ricardo Mussa, CEO of Raízen, also commented on the agreement and highlighted that it reinforces the company's role, “which presents sustainable solutions for both the present and the future, taking into account the challenge of global decarbonization”.

Finally, Lauran Wetemans, vice president of Shell's Downstream business for Latin America, reported that the partnership is essential to promote the expansion of the use of bioenergy in the automotive sector.

“Shell makes investments in several alternatives related to the energy transition to a low-carbon economy – such as EVs and hydrogen. Since all options are important to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and biofuels are an already available solution, it is a pleasure to be part of this initiative in Brazil”, he concluded.

More about the initiative

The agreement considers the supply of renewable natural gas from Raízen's bioenergy parks to replace the use of natural gas in Volkswagen's factories in Brazil, based on the use of waste from sugar and ethanol production, bringing a reduction in emissions compared to fossil alternative.

Renewable natural gas reduces CO2 emissions by more than 80%. Energy will also be supplied to the Volkswagen dealership network through Raízen's distributed renewable energy generation plants.
