A Whirlpool, a household appliance manufacturer that owns the Brastemp, Consul and KitchenAid brands in Brazil, inaugurated on Thursday afternoon (22) its first solar farm in Brazil, at the Joinville (SC) unit. The system has around 100 photovoltaic modules and the generation estimate is approximately more than 56 MWh per year.
The energy generated will serve the company's nursery and training center. “We have a strong commitment to ESG agenda (Environmental, Social and Governance) for more than 60 years, and this initiative connects to the global commitment to become Net Zero by 2030”, he states Guilherme Marcondes, Manufacturing Director at the Whirlpool Unit in Joinville.
According to the company, the installation of the solar farm adds to other initiatives on the environmental front, such as the use of 100% clean and certified energy in the Units in Brazil – in Joinville, scheduled for 2024 – to the Zero Waste to Landfill milestone in all plants around the world, with Brazil being a pioneer since 2015; and water management, which reached a rate of 98% of water recirculation in the production process.
“This year, we will complete 73 years in the city, being the oldest Whirlpool plant in Brazil. We have almost 6 thousand employees, responsible for producing refrigerators, freezers, water purifiers and beverage machines, in addition to globally concentrating our largest domestic refrigeration production and research hub, with exports to more than 45 countries”, adds Marcondes.
