Non-technical losses, known as energy theft or popularly called “cats”, is one of the biggest challenges in economic energy regulation today, according to the Agency.

As published by the ABRADEE (Brazilian Association of Electricity Distributors), around 40.7 TWh were stolen in 2023, equivalent to the value of R$10.1 billion.

According to the regulatory body, the event seeks to build sustainable solutions to serve areas with high socioeconomic complexity, with an impact on the sustainability of the service and the affordability of tariffs.

The opening of the program will be made by the ANEEL board at 9 am, followed by:

  • Technical presentation: “Regulation as an instrument to mitigate commercial losses: its role and challenges”;
  • Discussion panels: “The challenge of providing electricity distribution services in areas of high socioeconomic complexity”, “Working with civil society to guarantee access to quality public services” and “International experiences in reducing commercial losses in the provision of public services .
