A PetroBrazil is exploring the use of nuclear energy as an alternative to decarbonize its operations on offshore oil platforms.

The proposal involves the development of SMRs (Small Modular Reactors) that could be installed close to production units, replacing the natural gas currently used for power generation.

These reactors would be manufactured in factories and transported to installation sites, offering flexibility and modularity.

The project is in its early stages and depends on technological advancements in SMRs. PetroBrazil is seeking partnerships with the Brazilian Navy to accelerate the development of this technology.

The idea is that the reactors can be installed on vessels close to the platforms or, if technology allows, directly on the units themselves or even on the seabed.

Currently, the PetroBrazil faces challenges related to reducing CO₂ emissions in its operations.

In the first half of 2025, the company recorded emissions of 15,3 kilograms of CO₂ equivalent per barrel of oil and gas produced, an increase of 0,5 kilograms compared to 2024. The electrification of platforms is seen as one of the alternatives to reduce these emissions.

In addition to the energy consumed on the platforms, small nuclear reactors could supply other applications, such as the extraction of reserves in declining oil fields, where energy availability is a limiting factor.

However, the development of this technology faces challenges, including the need to convince public opinion of its safety and viability.

A PetroBrazil is also evaluating other energy sources to decarbonize its operations, such as offshore wind power, connecting platforms to the national electricity grid, and creating energy hubs with carbon capture.

These initiatives are part of the company's efforts to reduce its emissions greenhouse gases and move forward in energy transition.
