A survey published this Monday (9) by INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property), points to growth in the number of patents related to the space sector, reinforcing the strategic importance of these innovations for Brazil's technological sovereignty. A large part of these innovations involve photovoltaic generation systems, used to supply energy to satellites in orbit. The data are part of Technological Radar No. 49, entitled “Overview of patenting of space technologies: energy for satellites and space propulsion”, prepared in partnership with AEB (Brazilian Space Agency). According to the survey, 65 new patent applications filed by residents of Brazil were identified, bringing the total number of space technologies registered in the country since 2010 to 164, according to the MAPTEC database (AEB's space technology mapping system). Within this universe, 124 applications are related to energy technologies for satellites. In the country, the main applicants are of US origin, while Brazilian residents account for approximately 8% of the registrations. The study shows that patent applications are mainly concentrated in the South and Southeast regions. The state of São Paulo leads in the number of applications, followed by Paraná. Outside this axis, Rio Grande do Norte stands out, driven by the work of UFRN (Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte). Other major applicants include institutions such as USP (University of São Paulo), IAE (Institute of Aeronautics and Space), INPE (National Institute for Space Research), Unicamp (State University of Campinas), and UFRGS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul). (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul). In the global analysis for satellite energy, the study identified 14.403 patent families worldwide, with significant growth in recent years. China leads in patent applications, followed by other countries with strong investment in space technology. It is worth noting that a patent is a formal application filed with the INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property) to protect a new technology, process, or equipment related to the production, efficiency, storage, or management of energy. In the time evolution graph, data for years from 2023 onwards cannot be considered consolidated due to the secrecy period.
