Brazil accounts for 49% of Latin America's installed data center capacity, consolidating its position as the region's main digital hub. Mexico follows with 27%, and Chile with 9%, according to data from a study by [source missing]. Moody's Ratings, released this week.
Research estimates that Latin America has approximately 2.340 MW of installed data center capacity, with an estimated annual growth of between 15% and 20%.
According to the agency, this expansion will be driven primarily by the spread of AI (Artificial Intelligence), which should increase the demand for digital infrastructure and, consequently, for electricity.
The study also points out that the trend is likely to strengthen investments in data centers, transmission, and power generation, especially in countries that already have more developed infrastructure, such as Brazil.
Energy will be a decisive factor.
Despite the growth potential, Moody's warns that the pace of data center expansion on the continent will depend on the availability of firm power, transmission grid capacity, regulatory clarity, and access to financing.
This is because, although Latin America has an electricity grid with a strong reliance on renewable sources, the deployment of new data centers still faces challenges, such as queues for grid connection, limitations in transmission infrastructure, licensing delays, and power outages in regions with high renewable energy production.
In Brazil, ANEEL The Brazilian National Electric Energy Agency (Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica) and the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) have already tendered more than R$ 60 billion in transmission projects, seeking to expand the capacity of the electrical system to meet the growth in this demand.
