Brazil has surpassed the milestone of 4 million photovoltaic systems in operation in the distributed solar generation segment, according to updated data from [source missing]. ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) this Wednesday (25).
These installations total 44,6 GW of power and benefit more than 7,1 million consumer units. The progress was rapid: the milestone was reached less than three years after the segment reached 2 million systems, in June 2023, and less than four years after the first million, recorded in May 2022.
According to ANEELResidential consumers account for almost 80% of installations – the equivalent of approximately 3,19 million distributed generation (DG) photovoltaic systems. Commercial establishments follow, with 385 plants, and the rural sector, with 350 systems installed.
In terms of state-level data, São Paulo leads in the number of installations, concentrating more than 674 distributed solar generation units, followed by Minas Gerais (416), Rio Grande do Sul (396), and Paraná (309).
Photovoltaic technology is already present in virtually all of Brazil: more than 99,9% of Brazilian municipalities have at least one self-generation system in operation.
Solar energy growth
The growth of distributed solar generation is occurring within a broader advancement of photovoltaic energy in the country. Considering also the large power plants connected to the SIN (National Interconnected System), solar energy already exceeds 65 GW of installed capacity, according to updated data from [source missing]. ABSOLAR (Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association).
Since 2012, the Brazilian solar sector has accumulated over R$ 288 billion in investments, generated more than 1,9 million jobs, and prevented the emission of approximately 105 million tons of CO₂ into the atmosphere. The activity has also contributed over R$ 90 billion in tax revenue to public coffers.
