The consulting firm Quacquarelli Symonds released the results of the second edition of the QS Sustainability ranking, which aims to classify which are the universities that develop the best sustainable practices on their campuses.

In Latin America, the study identified that four of the ten best-rated universities are Brazilian, being the USP (University of São Paulo) the highest placed higher education institution in the ranking and ahead of the National Autonomous University of Mexico; from the University of the Andes, in Colombia; and the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.

The other Brazilian universities in the “top-10” were: Unicamp (State University of Campinas), the UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) and the UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina), in fifth, seventh and tenth place, respectively.

The research took into account three criteria to prepare the ranking: environmental impact (environmental sustainability; research on the environment; and environmental education), social impact (knowledge exchange; health and well-being; employability and income; equality; and educational impact) e governance.

Use of solar energy

One of the actions that the four Brazilian universities best ranked in the study have in common is use of photovoltaic systems and initiatives aimed at promoting solar energy on their campuses.

O Canal Solar, for example, has already produced journalistic articles showing that both USP and Unicamp have their own testing laboratories for solar energy systems, in addition to many other initiatives.

At UFRJ, it was reported that the institution's University Hospital operates using a photovoltaic system on the facade, while at UFSC it was shown that the university has been implementing a series of initiatives aimed at production of solar energy, green hydrogen and ammonia.
