A ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) approved this Monday (22) the notice for the next energy transmission auction, which foresees the construction and operation of 1.866 km of new transmission lines and sectioning, in addition to the installation of 13.564 MVA in transformation capacity. Scheduled for October 30th of this year, the auction involves estimated investments of R$ 8,9 billion.
The tender notice will now be forwarded to the TCU (Federal Court of Accounts) for analysis, in accordance with the procedure established for this type of bidding process. The selected projects are distributed across seven states: Bahia (BA), Goiás (GO), Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), Paraíba (PB), Paraná (PR), Rondônia (RO), and São Paulo (SP).
The largest project in the auction is Lot 4, with an estimated investment of R$ 4,1 billion, in the states of Goiás, Paraná, and Mato Grosso do Sul. This lot has been divided into two sub-lots, which will be auctioned separately and later combined.
The strategy aims to increase competitiveness and encourage the submission of proposals with lower costs for the overall project. The tender also no longer includes the interconnection with Bolivia. This measure will allow for in-depth studies of the Bolivian electrical system and align the implementation schedules of the projects in both countries.
Deadlines
Completion deadlines vary between 36 and 60 months, starting from the signing of the concession contracts. According to estimates from ANEELThe execution of these projects could generate approximately 20,5 direct jobs during the construction phase.
Before approval, the tender underwent public consultation between April 9 and May 25, through Public Consultation No. 006/2026. In total, 258 contributions were received from 33 participants, of which 94 were fully accepted by the Agency. The opinion of the TCU (Federal Court of Accounts) and the final decision of the board of directors of the ANEEL Details about the event are scheduled for September.
Why does the government hold transmission auctions?
Transmission auctions are one of the main tools used by the Federal Government to expand and strengthen the SIN (National Interconnected System). Through these auctions, private and state-owned companies compete for the right to build, operate, and maintain new transmission lines and substations.
In return, they receive an annual income defined in the contract, regulated by ANEELThe goal is to ensure that the electrical infrastructure keeps pace with the growth in energy demand and the entry of new generation projects, especially solar and wind power plants, which are often located far from the main consumer centers.
In addition to increasing the security of the electrical system, the projects help reduce bottlenecks in the grid and create conditions for connecting new generation projects to the system. The reinforcements and expansions are defined based on studies conducted by EPE (Energy Research Company) and ONS (National System Operator), which identify the future needs of the transmission network.
Currently, the sector's planning foresees two ordinary transmission auctions per year, usually one in each semester. Coordination is the responsibility of the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy), while the... ANEEL is responsible for drafting the calls for bids and conducting the selection processes.
This year, the Government already held the first transmission auction of 2026 on March 27th, at the B3 headquarters in São Paulo. All five lots offered were sold, guaranteeing contracts for projects totaling approximately R$ 3,3 billion in investments in the country's electricity transmission infrastructure.
