China added 211,6 GW of solar power capacity in the first half of 2025, more than double the amount recorded in the same period of 2024, when the volume was 102,5 GW.
Of this total, 112,81 GW came from DG (distributed generation), which represents a growth of 113% compared to the previous year.
The highlight was the C&I (commercial and industrial) segment, which grew 135% and accounted for 87,2 GW of new installations. The residential sector added 25,6 GW, an increase of 62%.
In centralized generation (GC), the increase was 99%, with the addition of 98,8 GW in the first half of the year. According to the National Energy Administration of China, 19 provinces installed more than 1 GW in large solar plants.
Among them, Xinjiang led with 19 GW, followed by Yunnan (11 GW). Jiangsu, Shanxi, Ningxia, and Shandong also stood out, all with more than 5 GW installed.
China surpasses 1 TW of installed solar power
The strong expansion of solar energy in the first half of the year led China to reach an unprecedented milestone: country became the first in the world to surpass 1 TW of installed photovoltaic capacity.
The mark was reached in the first half of 2025, surpassing the forecast by more than a year. IEA (International Energy Agency), which estimated this feat only for 2026.
This progress was driven by public policies to encourage renewable energy, support for the industrial module manufacturing sector and growing domestic demand.
