Since 2013, photovoltaic DG (distributed generation) has grown at an average rate of 230% per year in Brazil, according to data released by ABSOLAR (Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association).
The study showed that in 2019, for example, the country had 1 GW of installed DG power. In January 2020, it doubled to 2 GW, and in June this year, reached 3 GW.
A survey conducted by Canal Solar, based on data from ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), showed that GD in Brazil increased by 77,83% in the first half of 2020 compared to the same period last year.
Still according to the survey of the Canal Solar, from January to June 2019, 544.193 kW of installed power were recorded in the country. In the first half of this year, this number was 956.807 kW, a difference of 412.614 kW.
Photovoltaic energy grows 150% per year
Another fact pointed out by ABSOLAR showed that in the last seven years, photovoltaic energy, both in centralized generation and distributed generation, grew in total at an average rate of 150% per year. Since 2017, solar has been doubling its installed capacity in the country. It went from 1 GW in 2017 to 2 GW in 2018, 4 GW in 2019 and 6 GW in 2020.
“Solar energy is growing rapidly in Brazil because it eases the budgets of families and companies by reducing the energy bill by more than 90%. We know from Sebrae that the electricity bill is the second largest expense for micro and small businesses, behind only the payroll. All this in addition to contributing greatly to the environment,” explained Ronaldo Koloszuk, president of the Board of Directors of ABSOLAR.
According to the association, Brazil took 16th position in the world ranking of photovoltaic solar sources in 2019, integrating the list of 20 countries with the most installed capacity from the source in operation – including centralized and distributed generation.
Solar energy on rural properties grows 120%
The installed power of solar energy in Brazilian rural areas more than doubled in the first half of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. This is what an exclusive survey carried out by Canal Solar.
In the first six months of this year, photovoltaic energy on rural properties reached 142 MW of power, an increase of 120% compared to 63 MW from January to June last year.
