Pacto Energia implemented a battery energy storage system (BESS) in its distribution network in Coronel Vivida (PR), in partnership with Matrix Energia.
With an investment of R$ 30 million, the project features 10 high-performance batteries, totaling 20 MWh of storage capacity. The system has been connected to the distributor's grid since February of this year.
Pacto Energia is one of the 54 electricity distribution companies in the country and operates in the municipality, serving approximately 30 inhabitants in an area of approximately 683 km², with a distribution network exceeding 450 km.
This initiative comes at a time when the Brazilian electricity sector is facing increasing challenges in network operation, especially related to fluctuations, demand peaks, and supply quality.
According to the companies, the use of BESS emerges as an alternative to meet demand bottlenecks in the region. Instead of investing in conventional infrastructure, the distributor opted for the technology to add up to 10 MW of power to the grid during peak consumption hours.
The proposal aims to increase the stability and predictability of operations, as well as improve the quality of supply, without the immediate need for large investments in infrastructure.
Ricardo Costa, director of product intelligence and regulation at Matrix Energia, states that, although storage systems While already present in generation, transmission, and behind-the-meter applications, direct use in the distribution network is still underexplored in Brazil.
"This is an application with the potential to contribute to the modernization of electrical infrastructure in other regions of the country," he said.
Rodrigo Pedroso, CEO of Pacto Energia, highlighted the role of technology in the network's operation. "In addition to guaranteeing continuity of supply, the system positions the Paraná-based distributor at the forefront of the energy transition," he stated.
To mark the official start of the initiative, the Pacto Group is holding a launch event in the municipality this Wednesday (8), bringing together authorities and representatives from the sector.
