EPE (Empresa de Pesquisa Energética) has made a groundbreaking recommendation in Brazilian sector planning, suggesting the application of DLR (Dynamic Line Rating) technology as a structural solution to expand the capacity of a transmission line in São Paulo.

With an estimated investment of R$ 2,1 million, the system will increase the transport capacity of the stretch by 20% and postpone a conventional reconstruction that would require approximately R$ 140 million.

The device must be installed on the 138 kV Mogi Guaçu–São João da Boa Vista II transmission line, circuits C1 and C2, which is part of the DIT (Other Transmission Installations).

According to EPE, the technology uses real-time monitoring of weather conditions to dynamically adjust energy transport capacity. Among the variables monitored are wind speed, ambient temperature, and solar radiation.

This approach differs from traditional methods, which adopt fixed and conservative limits calculated from static weather conditions. With DLR, planning considers the capacity effectively available on the line according to monitored conditions, thus maximizing the use of existing infrastructure.

Technical analyses indicate that the normal transport capacity limit for the section, identified as the main operational bottleneck of the line, could increase from 79 MVA to 95 MVA.

According to EPE, the increase will provide greater flexibility to the regional system and allow local distributors to contract new MUSTs (Transmission System Usage Amounts).

The expansion also aims to guarantee the supply of large, energy-intensive loads connected to the region, such as data centers. The estimated timeframe for sensor deployment is up to 14 months.

According to the company, the solution will allow postponing the complete reconstruction of the line beyond 2038, extending the use of the existing infrastructure.

The investment of approximately R$ 140 million corresponds to the estimate for this conventional reconstruction. The proposal with DLR seeks to postpone this disbursement through a lower-cost intervention, contributing to more affordable fares.

In the report, EPE states that the technology will allow "maximizing the use of existing infrastructure and postponing investments in transmission assets."

The study also proposes reinforcements to 374 km of lines.

In addition to the DLR, the study recommends a set of works in the Araras, Atibaia, and Mogi Mirim regions to increase the reliability of the 138 kV DIT network and meet the load growth in São Paulo.

The interventions include the upgrading of 374 kilometers of double-circuit transmission lines and the installation of a device based on SSSC (Static Synchronous Series Compensator) technology, intended for controlling active power flow and optimizing the existing network.

The suite of solutions combines infrastructure interventions with technologies that allow for better utilization of network capacity, aiming to meet expanding demand with efficient investments.
