UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina) and Celesc (Santa Catarina Electric Power Company) have developed, in partnership, a mobile system capable of temporarily guaranteeing the supply of electricity during maintenance work on the Santa Catarina distribution network.
The solution utilizes "second-life" batteries, discarded from electric vehicles, installed in a semi-trailer truck, forming a Transportable Battery Energy Storage System.
According to the university, the project arose from studies conducted with batteries previously used in an electric bus.
Currently, when the utility company needs to perform services on a specific section of the network, the conventional procedure requires shutting off the power to ensure the safety of the technical teams.
With the new system, the truck is pre-connected to the local network and temporarily takes over refueling while the main network remains offline for maintenance.
The system includes first- and second-life lithium-ion batteries with capacities of 300 kWh and 100 kWh, respectively, as well as a 150 kVA diesel generator used as a system backup.
Through a transformer, the solution can operate on both low-voltage (220/380 V) and medium-voltage networks of the company, at 13,8 kV.
According to the university, the project has already been approved by... ANEEL It also involves the companies Truckvan and WEG, responsible for the mechanical structure of the semi-trailer and the technology embedded in the system, respectively.
