National electricity consumption totaled an average of 73.669 MW in the first quarter, representing a 1,2% decrease compared to the same period last year.
The result was mainly impacted by the performance of the regulated market, which ended the period with an average of 43.099 MW, a volume 4,1% lower than that recorded between January and March 2025.
According to CCEE (Chamber of Electric Energy Commercialization), the performance of the regulated market was influenced by the increased migration of consumers to the free energy market, as well as milder temperatures, especially in the South and Southeast regions, a factor that naturally reduces electricity consumption.
The free market recorded an average load of 30.570 MW in the quarter, a 3,1% increase compared to the same period last year. According to CCEE, this growth is directly related to the 4.864 consumers who entered the free market in the first three months of the year, in addition to the positive performance of 9 of the 15 economic segments monitored in real time by the institution.
Among the sectors monitored by CCEE that operate in the free market, the standout was the Services segment, with a 12% growth in consumption in the first quarter compared to the same period of the previous year.
Next in line are Sanitation, with an increase of 11,3%, and Extraction of Metallic Minerals, with an advance of 10,9%. Conversely, the chemical industry showed a contraction of 4%, followed by the Telecommunications (-3,6%) and Metallurgy and Metal Products (-3,1%) segments.
Regional analysis
In the analysis by state, considering total consumption in both free and regulated markets, Pará led the growth in demand, with an increase of 7,1% in the first three months of the year, followed by Sergipe (6,8%) and Amazonas (5,7%).
On the other hand, the South and Southeast regions were more impacted by the cold fronts recorded during the period and showed a decrease in consumption across almost their entire area. The largest drops were observed in Rio de Janeiro (-5,9%), Goiás (-5,3%) and Minas Gerais (-3,4%).
