Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, announced this week the start of construction on its first data center in Canada. Located in the province of Alberta, the facility will have 1 GW of electrical capacity and will be dedicated to processing Artificial Intelligence applications.
According to the company, the project represents an investment of over C$13 billion (equivalent to R$47,4 billion) and will be powered by 100% clean and renewable energy.
To meet the demand of the new data center, the parent company announced that it will fully finance the expansion of the electrical infrastructure necessary for the project, including new generation assets and reinforcements to the transmission network.
According to the company, the energy plan is being developed in partnership with the Alberta Electric System Operator, AltaLink, Capital Power, and Greenlight Limited Partnership.
The company also states that all costs related to electricity supply will be borne by Meta itself, without passing them on to local consumers, and that investments in generation and infrastructure should contribute to increasing the reliability of Alberta's electrical system, in addition to meeting the demand of the new data center.
In addition to supplying renewable energy, the project will utilize a closed-loop liquid cooling system with dry cooling. Meta justifies this by stating that this technology eliminates the operational consumption of water in the cooling system.
With this, water usage will be restricted to services such as fire fighting, equipment maintenance, and domestic consumption within the facility.
