Expanding transmission infrastructure is one of the main challenges for the Brazilian electricity sector, especially at a time when the expansion of renewable generation is hampered by a lack of capacity to transport the energy produced.
In this context, the SIN (National Interconnected System) has just received an important boost. Isa Energia Brasil completed the Piraquê Project 16 months ahead of schedule, an undertaking that received investments of R$ 3,85 billion.
With the start of operations, the company will be entitled to an Annual Permitted Revenue (RAP) of R$ 343,1 million. Awarded in the 2022 transmission auction, the project consists of eight transmission lines – seven at 500 kV and one at 345 kV – totaling approximately 1.000 kilometers in length between Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo.
The project also includes the construction of two new substations, Janaúba 6 and Capelinha 3, in addition to the expansion of the Jaíba, Janaúba 3, Governador Valadares 6, João Neiva 2, Viana and Viana 2 substations.
One of the main distinguishing features of the project was the adoption, for the first time in Brazil, of chalice-type towers, developed to meet the geographical characteristics of Espírito Santo.
The projects also employed drones and laser scanning technology for vegetation management activities, unprecedented solutions in energy transmission projects in the country.
According to the company, the Piraquê Project will expand the capacity for transporting renewable energy generated in northern Minas Gerais, in addition to increasing the reliability and operational flexibility of the National Interconnected System.
EPE (Energy Research Company) classifies the project as strategic for the expansion of Brazil's electrical infrastructure. During the implementation phase, the project generated more than 7.300 direct and indirect jobs and boosted economic activity in municipalities in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo.
“It is a delivery that generates value for the country, contributing to the integration of the system, energy security and the advancement of the energy transition,” said Rui Chammas, CEO of Isa Energia Brasil.
