Neoenergia announced this week that it is investing approximately R$ 868 million in the construction of 12 new power substations and the expansion of another 33 units.
Three new power substations and six expansion projects have already been delivered, and the rest will be completed by December in 57 municipalities across the states of Pernambuco, Bahia, Rio Grande do Norte, São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, and the Federal District, benefiting more than 1,7 million customers.
Designed with more robust construction and technology standards, the projects are integrated into the distributor's operations center. The new substations and units aim to strengthen the resilience of the networks in the face of intense weather events.
“The new deliveries and substation expansions reinforce the system's power and reliability, which are essential to cope with extreme weather events, keep pace with the growth of the cities where we operate, and boost strategic sectors of each region's economy,” says Eduardo Capelastegui, CEO of Neoenergia.
Investments by state
Bahia is the state that will receive the largest number of substations and expansions, with six new units and 23 expansions carried out by Neoenergia Coelba, with emphasis on the coast and western Bahia, which will receive infrastructure reinforcement to serve tourism and agribusiness.
The Neoenergia Pernambuco area will receive two new substations, as will the Neoenergia Elektro area, which serves cities in São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul. Neoenergia Brasília and Neoenergia Cosern will each have one new substation in their respective concession areas.
R$50 billion by 2030
In its new investment cycle, announced in May of this year, Neoenergia highlighted that it will invest R$ 50 billion by 2030 in its five distribution companies. In total, 115 new substations will be delivered during this period and another 162 will be expanded.
R$25 billion will be allocated to Neoenergia Coelba; R$9,7 billion to Neoenergia Pernambuco; R$8,2 billion to Neoenergia Elektro; R$4,1 billion to Neoenergia Cosern; and R$3,1 billion to Neoenergia Brasília.
Of the total planned investment, 46% will be allocated to expanding the electrical infrastructure, 40% to modernizing, digitizing, and improving the networks, and 14% to combating losses and supporting operational infrastructure, including systems, fleets, and information technology.
