Every four days, on average, a balloon has interfered with the power grid in the Enel-SP concession area in 2025. The data, which already totals 35 occurrences between January and May alone, raises an alert not only for the risks to the population's safety, but also for the direct impacts on the energy supply.
In total, more than 8 consumer units were affected by the balloon release—a higher number than in previous years. In the same periods in 2023 and 2024, just over 7,2 and 6,2 customers were affected, respectively.
The month of May 2025 illustrates the severity of the situation. There were 10 incidents caused by balloons, leaving 5,755 consumer units without power.
Data from January to May 2025
| Months | Number of occurrences | Number of customers affected |
| January | 3 | 94 |
| February | 7 | 511 |
| March | 11 | 1415 |
| April | 4 | 299 |
| May | 10 | 5755 |
| Total | 35 | 8074 |
The growth demonstrates not only the increase in the practice, but also its ability to cause large-scale damage to electrical infrastructure. Although often seen as part of cultural manifestations, balloons are extremely dangerous.
When they come into contact with the electrical grid – especially high and medium voltage cables – they can cause short circuits, explosions, fires and broken wires, which pose a direct risk to the lives and safety of residents and technicians working in the affected areas.
