The price of energy in the Free Market has been on a downward trajectory since April, opening a window of opportunity for agents who are still uncontracted in the second half of the year.
This move is especially positive at a time when several energy traders and free consumers are facing difficulties in purchasing energy due to the lower liquidity observed in the market.
At the beginning of April, the product with delivery in July was trading at around R$ 270/MWh. Data from negotiations carried out on BBCE (Brazilian Energy Trading Platform) at the beginning of this month show that the same product is now being traded in the range of R$ 128/MWh, a drop of 52,6%.
The decline was also observed in contracts for the third quarter. Between the last week of June and the first week of July, the price fell from R$ 187/MWh to R$ 164/MWh, a reduction of 12,3%.
According to Eduardo Rossetti, Executive Director of Products, Communication, Marketing and Institutional Relations at BBCE, the combination of more favorable hydrological conditions, high reservoir levels and lower energy demand has been pushing prices down.
According to him, the movement gained momentum last week after the release of the CMO (Marginal Cost of Operation) for the operating week of July 4-10, which was zero in practically all submarkets of the country.
“According to agents operating in BBCE, the market may have anticipated the release of the CMO. The only exception was the North region, where the Marginal Operating Cost was R$ 289,25/MWh due to local supply restrictions,” Rossetti stated.
