Enel announces R$7,8 billion in improvements to energy supply

The plan foresees improvements to the network throughout the concession area, which has been the target of criticism from the population

Enel announced an investment plan for the next four years, with investments of R$7,4 billion in the State of Ceará between 2025 and 2027 – an increase of 54% compared to the previous plan, which totaled R$4,8 billion for the period from 2024 to 2026.

The plan foresees investments throughout the concession area, to improve the energy supply, which has been the target of criticism in the northeastern state and also in other regions.

In July 2024, the MP-CE (Public Ministry of Ceará) instituted an administrative procedure to monitor Enel's service provision in the interior of the State after residents reported constant power outages and fluctuations.

In September, after analyzing quality indicators released by ANEEL, the Decon (State Consumer Protection and Defense Program) of the MP-CE instituted a new procedure to investigate a possible worsening in energy supply services to the population of Ceará.

In São Paulo, the situation was also turbulent, with the distributor having been notified by Procon-SP on four occasions since November 2023 due to a sequence of blackouts, especially in capital of São Paulo and metropolitan region.

At the time, around 4 million people were left without power due to a storm. In March of this year, Enel's power supply in São Paulo was interrupted again and residents in the city center were left without power. The blackout also affected the operation of the Santa Casa hospital.

What is ENEL's plan?

In a meeting held with the governor of Ceará, Elmano de Freitas (PT), the CEO of the Enel Group, Flavio Cattaneo, and other directors of the Italian company detailed the investment plan for the State.

One of the points includes the hiring of 1.340 new employees and the incorporation of 480 vehicles, to work mainly in field operations. This year alone, around 700 new employees will be hired.

In addition to reinforcing the teams of professionals, the company committed to intensifying preventive maintenance, increasing the number of preventive pruning operations and modernizing the electrical grid with the aim of reducing unscheduled shutdowns.

Each year, the company reported that it plans to carry out around 50 maintenance operations, 340 pruning operations and inspections on more than 60 km of the electrical grid throughout the state.

Between 2025 and 2027, 13 new substations will also be built and another 85 units will be modernized and expanded, to serve 3 million customers.

The distributor will also build more than 600 km of high voltage network to support the new supply points in the capital Fortaleza and in the municipalities of Aquiraz;

In terms of equipment and materials, more than 13,5 transformers and 126 posts will also be added to the current infrastructure. In the service area, the plan foresees investments in the modernization of six large stores and three medium-sized units, in addition to the revitalization of 72 shared service points throughout the state.
