Nearly 7 million consumer units already receive energy credits through distributed generation (DG) in Brazil, a model that is present in practically the entire national territory and continues on an expansion trajectory.
By 2026, the expectation is for growth of around 15% in the segment's installed capacity, driven mainly by solar power.
Data from ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) indicates that the country currently has approximately 3,87 million distributed generation systems connected to the grid, spread across 5.565 municipalities.
This set of facilities totals approximately 43,5 GW of installed capacity and benefits around 21 million people. According to the ABGD (Brazilian Distributed Generation Association), the projection is that this volume will reach 50 GW by the end of 2026.
Solar energy accounts for approximately 99% of the installed capacity in Brazilian distributed generation, consolidating itself as the main technology in the segment. This prominence is also reflected in the consumer profile, with the residential class leading in the number of connections, which already exceeds 3 million installed systems, followed by the commercial and rural segments.
According to the president of ABGD, Carlos EvangelistaBetween 2024 and 2025, more than 1,5 million new connections were registered.
By 2026, in addition to expanding installed capacity, the expectation is for technological advancements, greater integration with storage systems for consumers, and the growth of collective models, such as solar condominiums.
"Distributed generation also brings economic and systemic benefits, such as reducing losses in the electricity grid, postponing investments in transmission and distribution, generating local jobs, and attracting private capital," the organization assessed.
According to Evangelista, these impacts were analyzed based on a technical study developed in 2025 by experts from USP (University of São Paulo).
