The MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) published, in the DOU (Official Gazette of the Union) this Monday (06), a dispatch that calls on 14 electricity distribution companies to sign the renewal of their concession contracts.

The companies serve different regions of the country and include dealerships in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro (South and Southeast regions), as well as Maranhão, Paraíba, Bahia, Sergipe, and Rio Grande do Norte (Northeast), Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul (Central-West), and Pará (North).

Check out the list of distributors summoned:

  • RGE Sul (RS)
  • CPFL Piratininga (SP)
  • EDP São Paulo (SP)
  • CPFL Paulista (SP)
  • Neoenergia Elektro (SP)
  • Light (RJ)
  • Equatorial Maranhão (MA)
  • Energisa Paraíba (PB)
  • Neoenergia Coelba (BA)
  • Energisa Sergipe (SE)
  • Neoenergia Cosern (RN)
  • Energisa Mato Grosso do Sul (MS)
  • Energisa Mato Grosso (MT)
  • Equatorial Pará (PA)

The document also stipulates that the ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) make the addendum terms available for signature within 60 days, formalizing the extension of the concessions.

At the end of March, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, had already indicated that the renewal of the distributors' contracts for another 30 years would be formalized jointly.

Concessions undergoing renewal process.

In total, 19 distributors with contracts valid until 2031 are undergoing a renewal process. The new concessions follow guidelines from the Federal Government that seek to increase the quality requirements in the provision of services to consumers.

The 14 companies summoned now join two others that already signed new contracts in the first quarter of the year: Neoenergia Pernambuco (PE) and EDP Espírito Santo (ES).

There are still some details to be defined regarding the three distribution companies operated by the Italian group Enel. ANEEL It has already recommended the renewal of concessions in Rio de Janeiro and Ceará.

The situation of Enel São Paulo is still under review. The concessionaire is the target of a process that could lead to the termination of the contract, a mechanism that allows the public authorities to end the concession before the scheduled deadline.

Experts see intervention by Enel São Paulo as unlikely.

ENEL: It's a huge shame for São Paulo and the Ministry of Mines and Energy of the federal government to renew the concession.
