Parliamentary Renewable Energy Front calls for public hearing to discuss water crisis

The president of the parliamentary front presented a request to the presidency of the Mines and Energy Commission today (2)

Representative Danilo Forte (PSDB-CE), president of the Parliamentary Front for Renewable Energy, filed this Wednesday (2) a request requesting a Public Hearing with the Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque, to debate the effects of the water crisis in the supply of electricity and in the national economy.

The request was made to the presidency of the Mines and Energy Commission. According to the deputy, the water crisis, already announced by the CMSE (Electricity Sector Monitoring Committee), will cause consequences in the electricity supply system and even losses in the economy that could reach 1% of the national GDP.

“It is time to analyze the scale of this crisis and point out ways now, in order to avoid greater damage. The Brazilian economy is already suffering harmful effects from the pandemic, experiencing another crisis within the crisis could be fatal for some sectors of our economy”, he states.

Forte states that the water crisis also shows that we need to rebuild Brazil’s energy generation base. “We have an energy generation model based on hydroelectric plants that needs to be rebuilt, as it is no longer capable of meeting base demand. Furthermore, the way we supplement energy, through thermal plants that run on gas, coal or oil, puts us at odds with the rest of the world. We need to accept that we need to invest in alternative generation plants such as wind, solar or biomass, which will allow us to consume less fossil fuels and preserve water in reservoirs,” he states.
