Installing a solar energy system at home has provided greater financial security for retiree Agostinho Doenha Filho and his wife, teacher Aparecida Cristina, who live in the interior of São Paulo.
By purchasing a photovoltaic system, the couple drastically reduced their electricity bills and managed to maintain their health insurance even after annual price adjustments, an example that reinforces the accessibility and social reach of DG (distributed generation) in Brazil.
According to Doenha Filho, when he turned 59, his health insurance costs increased significantly. To balance their budget, the couple decided to invest their savings in a solution that would provide a continuous and predictable return. "We preferred to invest in something that would provide this return so we wouldn't lose our health insurance," he told Canal Solar.
According to him, with the photovoltaic system installed, the monthly energy bill, which varied between R$350 and R$400, became around R$60. According to Doenha Filho, without the system's own generation, the bill would already be between R$500 and R$600 today, due to successive tariff adjustments.
Besides the savings, the couple highlighted the ease of payment as a decisive factor. "They offer installments of up to 48 times. Nowadays, anyone can afford it," says the retiree, highlighting how the advancement of financing and credit options has expanded access to solar technology.
For Aparecida, the decision was the result of planning and long-term vision. "We had some money set aside and thought it would be a good investment. Sometimes you have to give up something now to get results later," says the professor.
Democratization of solar energy
Stories like those of Agostinho and Aparecida are multiplying throughout the country, reflecting the expansion of distributed generation and its social role. According to data from ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), Brazil has already surpassed 2,5 million consumer units with their own energy generation, more than 80% of which are residential.

The sun as a synonym for stability
By ensuring the reduction of fixed costs, solar energy has become an ally of Brazilians seeking financial predictability and energy independence.
In the case of Agostinho and Aparecida, the decision to invest in the system meant more than just monthly savings; it represented the possibility of maintaining their quality of life and security in retirement.
"The savings that solar energy has brought have made all the difference. It's something that pays off and brings peace of mind," summarizes Agostinho.
With stories like this, distributed generation reaffirms its role in the present and future of Brazil's electricity grid: a clean, accessible, and democratic technology that is enabling more and more families to transform the sun into financial freedom.
