With the increase in electricity consumption in Brazil, residential and commercial condominiums have become increasingly interested in solutions that offer greater savings and predictability in costs. In this scenario, the Free Energy Market has established itself as one of the alternatives for this public.
According to EPE (Energy Research Company), national energy consumption totaled 144.186 GWh in the first quarter of 2025 — an increase of 2,1% compared to the same period last year. The residential sector led this growth, with an increase of 3,4% (47.822 GWh), while the commercial sector totaled 27.073 GWh.
This movement has been driven by regulatory changes, especially by Ordinance No. 50/2022 of the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy), in force since January 2024.
The standard guarantees all consumers in Group A — that is, those connected to the medium and high voltage grid — the right to choose their energy suppliers. In this scenario, energy traders have registered an increase in demand from condominiums.
In contact with Canal Solar, Prime Energy — a Shell Group solutions provider for business consumers — reported that it registered an increase of more than 40% in contracts closed with residential condominiums, with a greater concentration in the regions of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Paraná.
In the commercial segment, condominiums presented an average consumption of 131,57 MWh in a period of less than 12 months, according to the company.
“We have seen significant growth in the number of condominiums seeking solutions focused on energy efficiency, which shows that the Free Energy Market has stood out as not only a viable but also an attractive alternative,” revealed Luiz Sigiliano, commercial director at Prime Energy.
