The world will add 692 GW of renewable energy by 2025, of which 511 GW (about 75% of the total) will come from solar power, according to a report released by IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency).
According to the survey Renewable Capacity Statistics 2026Renewable sources accounted for 85,6% of the total expansion of energy capacity during the period, while non-renewable sources had a significantly smaller share.
Besides solar, wind energy comes in second place, with 159 GW added. Together, solar and wind accounted for 96,8% of all new net additions of renewable capacity in 2025, reflecting the competitiveness and falling costs of these technologies.
In the case of hydroelectric power (excluding reversible plants), 18,4 GW were added, with 96% of this growth concentrated in China. Bioenergy advanced 3,4 GW during the period, while geothermal energy registered an addition of 0,3 GW.
Renewables gain prominence in a scenario of uncertainty.
The report also highlights that geopolitical tensions have once again placed the energy sector at the center of global discussions. "The escalation in the Middle East raises new concerns about security of supply and the volatility of fossil fuel prices," the study points out.
In this context, renewables are gaining relevance as a solution for more resilient systems that are less vulnerable to external shocks. Because they are produced locally, have lower costs, and allow for faster deployment, these sources contribute to reducing dependence on international fuel markets.
Commenting on the results, IRENA's Director-General, Francesco La Camera, highlighted the consistent growth of renewables even in adverse scenarios. "In times of uncertainty, renewable energy remains consistent and steady in its expansion. This not only indicates market preference but also clearly demonstrates the resilience of these sources," he stated.
