On July 11th, the São Francisco Photovoltaic Plant was inaugurated, an initiative that aims to supply up to 65% of the energy demand of the National Sanctuary of Aparecida complex, one of the main religious tourism centers in the country.
Located approximately 3 km from the Basilica, on the São José Farm, the plant occupies an area of over 80.000 m² and has approximately 12 solar panels. According to technical data, the structure is capable of generating up to 10.200 MWh annually, enough to power approximately 5,6 homes.
In addition to energy autonomy, the project seeks to have a positive impact on the environment: it is estimated that the plant's production will prevent the emission of approximately 5,1 tons of CO₂ per year, which represents a direct contribution to mitigating global warming.
The energy captured will be used not only in the Basilica, but also in adjacent structures such as the Pilgrim Support Center, the Padre Vítor Coelho de Almeida Events Center, the Pilgrim City and surrounding hotels.
Integration is seen as a way to modernize the Sanctuary's infrastructure and reduce its dependence on energy sources conventional, generally more polluting.
