A survey conducted by the CNI (National Confederation of Industry) showed that 41% of Brazilian industries have migrated to the Free Energy Market since January 2024, when the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) regulation came into effect.) which broadened consumer access to the free contracting environment.
According to the study, approximately 73% of business owners who left the regulated market saw a reduction in electricity costs. Furthermore, 30% of companies cited the switch as the primary strategy for reducing their electricity bill.
The study data also indicate that, amidst a scenario of fluctuations in the electricity sector driven by high global demand and geopolitical conflicts, companies' interest in the free energy market has increased.
Despite this progress, there is still great potential for expansion in this market. Among the companies served at low voltage that remain in the regulated market, 37% have expressed interest in migrating to the free market.
Among companies served at high voltage, 63% already purchase energy in this environment. In small industries, 22% have already migrated to the free market, while 45% remain in the regulated market.
The research also reveals that 79% of industries use electricity as their main energy source in their production processes, and that the cost of energy remains one of the sector's main challenges.
"The research shows the importance of energy costs for the competitiveness of industry and that the path chosen by companies to reduce tariffs involves migrating to the free market," highlights Roberto Wagner Pereira, Energy Manager at CNI (National Confederation of Industry).
