A battery energy storage system (BESS), integrated with a 4,5 MW solar power plant, promises to reduce electricity costs to near zero for the Maniçoba Public Irrigation Project, located in Juazeiro (BA).
The project received an investment of nearly R$ 25 million and aims to transform the energy management of agricultural activity in the region. Currently, electricity represents more than half of the budget of the Maniçoba Irrigation District, which is responsible for managing the project.
With the installation of the new structure, the expectation is to reduce expenses related to water pumping, one of the main activities that depend on the energy supply.
Inaugurated in September, the project brings together 5.400 photovoltaic modules and a BESS system, a technology that allows the electricity produced by the solar panels to be stored for use at other times, according to operational needs.
The project was made possible through financing from BNB (Banco do Nordeste), with a repayment term of ten years. Codevasf (Companhia de Desenvolvimento dos Vales do São Francisco e do Parnaíba) participated in the negotiations for the implementation of the project, acting as an intermediary between the financial institution and government representatives.
The storage system was installed at the main pumping station, while photovoltaic generation is carried out by the solar power plant. The combination of technologies allows for greater flexibility in energy use, especially in an activity that depends on electricity to guarantee the water supply of cultivated areas.
Built between 1975 and 1981 by Codevasf, the Maniçoba Public Irrigation Project has fruit farming as one of its main economic activities. Mango production alone reaches approximately 90 tons per year, destined for both the domestic market and export.
