Brazil surpassed the mark of 10,2 GW of new generating units released in 2024, driven by the expansion of renewables, such as solar and wind. According to ANEEL(National Electric Energy Agency), more than 95% of the capacity released this year is from renewable sources.
The milestone was reached in November with the release of unit 31 of the Vista Alegre XII Solar Plant, in Minas Gerais, one month before the end of the year, reinforcing the trajectory of sustainable growth and decentralization of the national energy matrix.
Throughout the year, 279 new plants were released. Of this total, 273 are powered by renewable sources, with emphasis on 134 solar plants and 114 wind farms.
The expansion also includes 8 PCHs (Small Hydroelectric Plants), 2 CGHs (Hydroelectric Generators) and 15 thermoelectric plants powered by biomass.
In addition, 6 thermoelectric plants were activated to reinforce the energy security of the national system and serve isolated regions in the North of the country.
According to ANEEL, in 2016, the released capacity reached 9,5 GW, and this value was only surpassed in 2023, when the mark was 10,3 GW. In 2024, there is a great expectation of surpassing the 2023 record.
