National electricity consumption in October was 47.796 GWh, representing an increase of 3,7% compared to October 2023. The data was released in Monthly Review of the Electric Energy Market from EPE (Energy Research Company).
According to the survey, the residential class led the increase in consumption in October, registering 15.081 GWh, representing an increase of 4,6% compared to the same month in 2023.
“Above-average temperatures, drier weather, changes in the consumption pattern of residential consumers, new consumer connections, reclassification of consumers from the rural class to the residential class and the improvement in employment and income conditions in the country contributed to the rise in consumption of this class in the month”, highlighted EPE.
Also according to the review, all regions presented positive residential electricity consumption rates in the month: North (+8,1%), Central-West (+6,9%), Southeast (+4,9%), South (+3,1%) and Northeast (+2,3%).
Industrial and commercial consumption also grew. In the commercial class, consumption was 8.663 GWh in October 2024, an increase of 2,8% compared to October 2023. All regions of the country consumed more commercial electricity in the month: North (+6,0%), Southeast (+3,6%), South (+3,0%), Central-West (+0,3%) and Northeast (+0,1%)
As for the industrial class, the review pointed out that the industry had the third highest consumption in the historical series since 2004, losing only to August and September. Among the 37 sectors monitored, 28 consumed more, with metallurgy leading.
Free Energy Market
As for the ACL (Free Contracting Environment), with 20.549 GWh, it accounted for 43% of national electricity consumption in October, with a growth of 10,7% in consumption and 48,3% in the number of consumers, compared to October 2023.
According to EPE, the South was the region that expanded consumption the most (+15,0%) and the Northeast had the largest increase in the number of free consumers (+73,8%).
“The expansion in the number of free consumers is in line with the migrations predicted for 2024 by ANEEL, after MME ordinance 50/2022 that expands the possibility of migration to all consumers in group A”, assessed EPE.
The ACR (Regulated Contracting Environment), the regulated market for distributors, with 27.247 GWh, accounted for 57% of national consumption, but fell by 0,9% in October.
The number of consumer units increased by 1,2% in the period, despite the migration of consumers to the free market. In the regulated market, the North recorded the greatest expansion in consumption (+3,7%) and the number of captive consumers (+3,9%).
