O Brazil consumed 69.363 MW electric energy medium last year, which represents around 3,7% compared to 2022 and one of the biggest demands in recent yearsAccording data of CCEE (Electric Energy Trading Chamber).

No regulated market, in which consumers buy their energy directly from distributors, high was by 2,5%, due to the more intense use of household appliances, such as fans and air conditioning, especially in the last months of the year, when temperatures broke records in much of the country.

Now at Free Energy Market, in which it is possible to choose the energy supplier and negotiate contract conditions, the consumption increased 5,9% in the annual comparison.

According to the CCEE, the growth reflects a combination of greater activity in some productive sectors, the arrival of new entrants in the segment and the impact of heat in sectors such as commerce and services, which also used refrigeration equipment more.

For Alexandre Ramos, president of the CCEE board of directors, the data show significant growth in Brazilian consumption compared to the previous year, in addition to an increase in renewable energy generation and an expansion of the Free Energy Market in the country.

Consumption by region

almost all states recorded higher consumption in 2023 compared to the previous year. Highlight for the Maranhao (33,8%), Acre (11,2%) and Mato Grosso (9,6%), which recorded temperatures above the historical average.

Only two states reduced consumption: Rio Grande do Sul, with a slight decline of 0,3%, and the Amapá, with a reduction of 1%, both influenced by a greater volume of rain in the period.

Consumption by branch of economic activity

CCEE monitors consumption in 15 sectors of the economy that purchase electricity on the Free Energy Market.

The three who had the biggest percentage advance in 2023 compared to the previous year, were sanitation (23,6%), trade (16,8%) and services (14,5%).

The first was positively influenced by the migration of companies to the Free Energy Market after the publication of the new legal framework for basic sanitation.

In the other two segments, the increase results from greater activity in supermarkets, shopping centers and other establishments, in addition to the more intense use of air conditioning, due to high temperatures.
