Brazil will be the country responsible for leading a global working group on energy certification and renewable hydrogen. The initiative, proposed by CCEE (Electricity Trading Chamber), was approved last Friday (09).
The project has the consent of sector representatives on all continents, who recently participated in CIGRE (International Committee for Production and Transmission of Electric Energy), in France.
“This is an important step to position us at the forefront of this new market. We will certainly be one of the largest exporters of the input in the world, acting as a fundamental piece to accelerate the planet's energy transition”, said Rui Altieri, president of the CCEE Board of Directors.
Companies sign partnership to convert ethanol into renewable hydrogen
The Chamber will begin to debate, now at an international level, which attributes will be considered to define hydrogen as renewable and which are the minimum criteria to be considered in certification of this product.
According to the entity, the work will be carried out together with members from other interested countries. CCEE will also launch, later this year, a simplified certification model to serve Brazilian projects that are already underway and will work to create a definitive version by 2023.
“One of the main requirements for another country to be interested in hydrogen manufactured in Brazil will certainly be the clean origin of the electrical energy used in its production”, explained Ricardo Gedra, Market Analysis and Information manager at the Chamber and one of those responsible for taking the proposal to CIGRE.
“Mechanisms will need to be created to ensure that the process respects customer requirements. CCEE is the only national organization capable of playing this role, as it registers electricity purchase and sale contracts and measures, at each moment, consumption and generation in all parts of the country”, he highlighted.
Hydrogen market in Brazil
A study carried out by the McKinsey consultancy stated that the segment should create investment opportunities of around US$200 billion over 20 years in the country.
The domestic market represents the largest portion of this new segment, with revenues of up to US$12 billion in 2040, driven by the transportation and steel sectors.
According to the company, with the competitive cost advantage, the estimate is that around US$6 billion can be generated from exports, especially to Europe and the United States.
