Colombia has registered 32 companies interested in participating in a new auction involving solar energy and battery storage projects. Among the registered companies are Enel, EPM, Celsia, and Terpel.
The process is being conducted by BMC (Colombian Mercantile Exchange), on behalf of the country's Ministry of Mines and Energy, and involves the contracting of energy for a period of 15 years.
Launched in June, the mechanism includes contracts with supply scheduled to begin in 2030 or 2035, depending on the conditions established in the process. Contract awards are scheduled for July 23rd and 24th.
Eligible projects include solar power generation projects with a minimum net effective capacity of 5 MW that have already been approved for connection to the electricity grid.
Existing plants may also compete for contracts through expansion projects. In this case, the additional capacity must represent at least 40% of the capacity proposed for the project.
The process also opens up opportunities for self-generation of renewable energy projects. Solar installations intended for self-consumption may participate provided they have at least 5 MW of surplus generation for sale.
The inclusion of battery storage projects comes amid the expansion of renewable sources in the Colombian electricity grid and the need to increase the system's flexibility to accommodate variable generation sources, such as solar and wind.
The country also contracted for new plants.
The new process comes just months after another auction held by the Colombian government to bolster the country's electricity supply. In May, contracts were awarded for 15 new power plants, in addition to existing generation projects.
The new projects are expected to begin operating from December 2029. Investments associated with the ventures are estimated at more than 16 trillion Colombian pesos, equivalent to approximately R$ 25 billion.
