Consumers overcome blackouts in São Paulo with solar energy and batteries

Storage investments show an advantage in the face of network failures

While thousands of consumers in the state of São Paulo faced power outages earlier this week, due to heavy rains and failures in the distribution network, some residents who invested in storage systems were able to maintain the electricity supply without interruptions.

"It was great. The power here in Jardim Paulistano has been going out frequently, and having a solar system with storage gives us the peace of mind of keeping the power on without having to rely on street power coming back on," said Roberto Monteiro, from São Paulo, who invested in a backup system and managed to maintain the power supply without interruptions.

He invested around R$48 in a system equipped with 595 W JA Solar modules and a 6 kW SolaX Split Phase inverter, coupled with 5,8 kWh batteries from the same brand. The installation was completed last Friday (19), in time to cope with the power outage that hit the entire neighborhood just three days later.

According to Ovidio de Freitas Collesi, partner and commercial director of Engpower Energia Solar, the company responsible for the project, the number of batteries must be increased so that the system can serve more loads within the residence.

Another São Paulo consumer who didn't suffer from the power outage was businessman Roberto Iacovella. "It was perfect. It was the third day in a row without power in the condominium. Saturday was because of the fire, Sunday and Monday because of the rain again. Thank God we got the system working," he said.

The motivation, he says, was to ensure comfort and stability for his home office. "I work from home most of the time. Losing power was very costly. I chose batteries instead of a generator because they work like a giant UPS—I usually don't even notice when the power goes out," he explained.

Iacovella invested approximately R$170 in a system with a 20 kW three-phase PHB inverter and 20 kWh of storage. According to Fernando Carvalheiro, owner of E-Tron, the company responsible for the installation, the solution was delivered just over a month ago and is also expected to be expanded with more batteries.

Blackout in the Metropolitan Region

This Monday alone, the ABC and South Zone regions of São Paulo were severely impacted by Enel's power outages. More than 900 consumers were left without power, according to data from the distributor.

In a publication in X, the concessionaire reported that the municipalities of Santo André, São Bernardo, São Caetano and Diadema, as well as neighborhoods such as Jabaquara, Vila Mariana and Ipiranga, are among the most affected areas.

Enel attributed the morning outage to a power outage at a substation owned by the Isa Energia Brasil transmission company. The distributor also reported trees and branches falling onto the power grid in several areas of the metropolitan region, worsening the damage.
