Gustavo Cerbasi, one of Brazil's most respected writers and financial educators, has made public his experience with the Smart Home project, an initiative that transforms his residence in São Roque (SP) into a model of energy independence.
The project's most recent addition is the installation of an energy storage system – a solution that eliminated the main vulnerability that still existed in the house: dependence on the utility company's electrical grid during power outages. The batteries used in the project are from the SolaX Power brand.
Cerbasi explains that the residence was acquired and renovated between 2017 and 2018 based on the philosophy of "survivalism": to function fully, comfortably and safely, regardless of the availability of public services such as energy, water and sanitation.
Since then, the house has had a photovoltaic power plant that produces more energy than it consumes, so the only monthly energy cost is the transmission fee charged by the utility company.
Despite generating its own energy, conventional photovoltaic systems legally require connection to the public grid (on-grid model), which left the house completely without power during blackouts, a particularly critical situation in an environmental protection area prone to falling trees and interruptions that could last more than 24 hours.

The solution: SolaX Power battery system
To overcome this limitation, Cerbasi turned to Plug Solar Energia, a partner company responsible for installing the photovoltaic plants and electric vehicle chargers on the property. They recommended implementing the SolaX Power battery system, which added the missing layer of stability and energy security to the project.
With the system installed, the house began operating in both on-grid mode (connected to the grid) and off-grid mode (autonomous, during power outages). The purchased batteries cover all the essential consumption of the residence, including interior lighting, refrigerators, microwaves, outlets, and satellite internet connection.
In total, the SolaX Power solution offers 18 hours of continuous autonomy under normal use, without the need for energy saving, enough time to get through a complete blackout without interrupting activities. The compact design of the technology was also highlighted by Cerbasi as a key differentiator of the product.

Proven results in practice.
The system's efficiency has already been tested in real-world situations. During a weekend with more than 15 people gathered at the house, a power outage in the area left the neighborhood in the dark, while Cerbasi's residence remained fully functional, with the family watching streaming series as usual.
In another incident, during a live stream of an online class recorded in the property's office, the power went out on the street. The only noticeable sign was a slight flickering of the lighting. The class continued without interruption.
Given the results, the same system was installed in Cerbasi's apartment in downtown São Paulo, an area also subject to frequent electrical infrastructure failures. The solution thus became a response to both the demands of the country house and the growing blackout crisis in the São Paulo capital.
Return on Investment
For Cerbasi, the return on investment in the storage system goes far beyond savings on the energy bill. “How much does a day of recording interrupted by a power outage cost? How much does it cost to cancel a live sales event or reschedule negotiation meetings?” he pointed out.
According to him, the continuity of work and leisure, without depending on fluctuations in the electrical grid, represents an immediate gain in productivity and quality of life. "SolaX Power equipment is just one more item that makes up the Smart Home project, an investment with an excellent financial return and, especially, in quality of life," stated Cerbasi.
